Education
Beyond the stage, PALENAI has developed educational and cultural initiatives that foster creativity, collaboration, and cross-cultural understanding. Through masterclasses, mentorship, community outreach, and the championing of Canadian composers and artists, Joy and Adrienne have inspired generations of musicians while creating meaningful connections between music and the communities it serves.
Education and Training
Originally from Calgary, Joy Innis studied at Mount Royal College Conservatory with Gloria Saarinen and graduated from the University of Toronto where she studied with Pierre Souverain and Patricia Parr. Adrienne Shannon studied with Boris Berlin at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto and completed her MMus with Ania Dorfman at the Juilliard School. Both pianists earned Doctor of Arts degrees at Ball State University with the mentorship of Mitchel Andrews.
Teaching
Joy Innis and Adrienne Shannon have held teaching positions at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Alberta College, Mount Royal University, Malaspina University, and Saint Leo University in Florida. They have adjudicated across Canada and conducted masterclasses and teachers’ workshops.
From 2004 to 2025, Joy and Adrienne taught and worked as collaborative pianists at the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University.
Digital Arts for Musicians
In 2002, the Ontario Ministry of Education approved a new diploma program developed by PALENAI for St. Lawrence College in Kingston. The first of its kind in Canada, Digital Arts for Musicians combined music education with emerging digital technologies, providing students with skills in multimedia production and recording. The program later established articulation agreements with Queen’s University, the University of Ottawa, and Tralee University in Ireland.
PALENAI has conducted masterclasses, seminars and workshops throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, as well as internationally in Ukraine, Korea and Israel.

Music for four hands and two pianos by Canadian women composers
Over four decades, Joy Innis and Adrienne Shannon have taught across a broad range of musical disciplines, including Piano, Music Theory, Ear Training, Music History, Chamber Music, Alexander Technique and Piano Pedagogy. As digital technologies became increasingly important to their own creative work, their teaching expanded to include digital media incorporating Adobe Photoshop and Premiere and the integration of sound, image and performance.
